An ECG captures a snapshot of your heart's electrical activity at the moment the trace is taken. It evaluates a broad range of cardiac indicators, including: Heart rate (whether too fast, too slow, or irregular), Heart rhythm (sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, ectopic beats), Possible heart enlargement, Inflammation around the heart sac, Abnormal blood markers (such as elevated potassium), and Indicators of previous or current cardiac events. However, because it records only a brief period, intermittent conditions such as occasional palpitations may not appear during the test, in which case a Holter Monitor, which provides continuous recording, may be more appropriate.

All ECG tracings showing any abnormality are reviewed by a Consultant Cardiologist, not just a general practitioner. This specialist oversight is included in the standard £100 fee and ensures that nothing is overlooked or misinterpreted.

No special preparation is needed. You can eat and drink normally beforehand. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your chest. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes and is entirely painless.

No. ECG testing at Blackwater Private Clinic is for investigatory purposes and is not suitable for acutely unwell patients. If you are experiencing severe chest pain, collapse, or any acute cardiac emergency, call 999 immediately.

An ECG is recommended if you are experiencing palpitations, a racing or irregular heartbeat, unexplained dizziness, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or if you have been diagnosed with or are being monitored for high blood pressure. It is also a useful baseline test as part of a broader cardiac health assessment.

If your tracing shows any abnormality, it is immediately escalated to our Consultant Cardiologist for review. You will receive a clear explanation of the findings and guidance on recommended next steps, whether that is further testing, such as a Holter Monitor or Echocardiogram, medication, or specialist referral.
