Nexplanon is licensed for use for up to 3 years, after which it should be removed or replaced. However, you do not need to wait until the 3-year mark. Early removal is perfectly appropriate if you are experiencing side effects, planning a pregnancy, or simply wish to use a different form of contraception.

Our doctors are members of the FSRH (Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health) and are accredited Nexplanon trainer practitioners — meaning they are not only highly experienced in performing removals but are qualified to train other medical professionals in the procedure.

A local anaesthetic is applied to the area before the procedure begins, so you should feel little to no pain during removal. Some bruising and tenderness around the site is completely normal in the days following and typically settles within a week.

Fertility can return very quickly after removal — in many cases within days. If you are not trying to conceive, alternative contraception should be used immediately after removal unless you are having the implant replaced in the same appointment.
